Black Inventor - Soni Oyekan

Dr. Soni O. Oyekan is the President and CEO of Prafis Energy Solutions, and a world-renowned expert in oil and gas, and oil refining.  Soni graduated from Yale University in 1970 with a BS degree in Engineering and Applied Sciences.  He graduated with a doctoral degree from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Chemical Engineering in 1977 with specialization in catalysis and reactor engineering.  While studying at CMU, Soni held a faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh between 1972 and 1977. Between 1977 and 1993, Soni conducted R&D studies in oil refining, catalysis and reactor engineering at Exxon, Engelhard and DuPont which resulted in two US and 9 foreign patents,

After 1993, Soni directed his expertise in applied catalysis and reactor engineering to oil refining processes optimization and management. Soni has provided technical and process technology management for over 35 refineries in the past 40 years. He was a corporate process technologist for Sunoco, Amoco/BP, and Marathon Petroleum Corporation with responsibilities for oil refining processes and technology support between 1993 and 2013 for 20 oil refineries. In addition, he led Sunoco and Amoco precious metals management systems between 1994 and 1999. He was granted 3 US patents, and 1 patent from Canada after 2014 for the continuous catalytic regeneration (CCR) technology, a naphtha reforming process. His inventions for the catalytic naphtha reforming processes are used globally in enhancing the production of transportation fuels.  He is the author of the oil refining book, Catalytic Naphtha Reforming Process, with special emphases on the catalytic naphtha reforming process. The book was published by CRC Press in 2018.

Soni has been conferred with several awards including the 2009 Percy Julian Award from National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) for his significant contributions to the oil refining industry. He has been honored by AIChE’s Fuels and Petrochemical Division (F&PD) and Minority Affairs Committee (MAC).  He is a Fellow of AIChE, a member of the AIChE Foundation Board of Trustees, of AIChE's Legacy Society and the Cumulative Giving group. Soni is married to Priscilla Ann, and they have 4 children and 5 grandsons.
