The White House hosted a Princess Party last month for 115 Black girls to celebrate literacy, Black excellence and themselves.

The event was led by 6-year-old Jordan West, author of Princess for a Day, and was held at the Department of Education on Oct. 17th. The party was created in continuance with the platform of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

At this party, Jordan read her book, which was the reason for the princess theme, and which is an “empowering story of a young Black girl who wanted to throw a party for girls who are homeless or are in the foster care system to ensure that they too, feel like princesses. One of the main lessons that surfaced was that young girls of color from marginalized communities can make a difference right now and recognize their potential to be the change they want to see,” according to the Education Post.

Today @officialafamed is excited to host Jordan West @kidslivetogive for an #AfAmLit(eracy) party at @usedgov. Jordan will read from a book that she wrote after hosting a Princess for a Day party for girls who are homeless or in foster care. This #literacy party is consistent with our efforts to highlight unique opportunities to meet the needs of students often neglected and ignored, celebrating Brilliant babies who demonstrate educational excellence and reframing positive, asset based narratives about children and what they are capable of. We salute Jordan and all the brilliant change agents like her. #service #scholarship #TeachTheBabies #mysisterssupporter #literacy #literacymatters #100blackgirlbooks #BlackGirlsRock #ChangeAgent #ChangeMaker

The girls also spoke and wrote down words of affirmation, among them, “I am beautiful.” “I am smart.” “I love my skin color.” “I love my hair,” according to the Instagram page for the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans.
