Al Sharpton Says Royal Wedding Is a Signal of White Supremacy Taking Its ‘Last Breath’

In response to the royal wedding, Rev. Al Sharpton declared Meghan Markle sitting next to Prince Harry made a bold statement about the state of white supremacy in America.

“The symbolism of a divorceé, person of color, standing up and becoming a member of the royal family, gave bigots a bad day yesterday, he says on MSNBC’s “Politics Nation” Sunday, May 20 at around the 30-second mark. “It doesn’t mean bigotry is over, doesn’t mean that white supremacy and white male homogeny is over, but it does mean that they’re losing their grip on the cultural definitions.

“And if we stand up and are determined that their backlash — ’cause they’ve not gone anywhere, the supremacists, — the backlash won’t work. We can begin making progress in the face of adversity.”

Sharpton’s statements were similar to those he made at The National Action Network Saturday, May 19.

“When you got little white girls now in Wales saying, ‘I want to be like Meghan,’ there’s a shift worldwide that white male supremacy is on its last breath,” the activist said in a Facebook Live stream after saying, “white supremacy is questioned” when young white girls aspire to be “beautiful and smart” like Michelle Obama and her daughters Malia and Sasha.

“That old world is passing away,” Sharpton said. “They never thought they’d see a day that we’d go from being hung and lynched in the square after Sunday church … to being attorney general.”

Still, he also highlighted the royal family’s racist past at the 1:34:17 mark. Sharpton noted the contrast between seeing Markle, who is biracial, her Black mother and the Black Rev. Bishop Michael Curry at the ceremony and the royal family hiding Queen Charlotte’s African heritage. The queen was married to King George III for 57 years and evidence showed she was directly descended from Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a Black division of the Portuguese Royal House.
