Baptist Church Comes Under Fire for Message to Black Males: ‘Respect Authority’
Baptist Church Comes Under Fire for Message to Black Males: ‘Respect Authority’
New Era Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama has a message for young black men that has drawn some criticism online.
“Young Black Males Must Respect Authority,” reads the church’s sign.
Clutch magazine reported that the church’s pastor, Reverend Michael R. Jordan, said the message is not a racial one.
“I know what’s going on in the black neighborhood and that’s what my focus is, right now, we need to work on in house the crime epidemic in West End, and it’s terrible.”
This is not the first time the church and its leader have come under fire for controversial signs. The pastor also defended the sign’s message when it said “AIDS Is God’s Curse On A Homosexual Life.”
The picture of the most recent sign, posted on Instagram two days ago, has drawn much criticism and ire.
Some of the comments are quite simple.

Other commentary is more complicated.

But virtually all of the commentary expressed anger at the racially charged nature of the sign.
