BET threw President Obama the most epic block party

On Tuesday, BET threw President Barack Obama the most epic block party in the form of its television special “Love & Happiness: An Obama Celebration.”

Black excellence was all around the room in the White House as celebrities paid tribute to America’s first black president and first lady. Hosted by Terrence J and Regina Hall, the special saw performances by Common, Yolanda Adams, Jill Scott, Janelle Monáe, Usher and The Roots, among others.

Some of the event’s other highlights — aside from seeing the Obamas singing and dancing to Bel Biv Devoe’s “Poison” — were touching speeches from Angela Bassett, Samuel L. Jackson and Jesse Williams, to name a few.

“Ain’t nobody cooler than you. You’ve been through the ringer… they even criticized you for swatting a fly!” Jackson joked.

Mrs. Obama, of course, got plenty of love too. “You have represented us like we have never been represented before,” said Regina Hall. “Your commitment to your family. The steady way you stand in your values. Your dedication to the health of all the nation’s children, and let’s be honest, the way you slay… thank you.”

“I want to thank BET for agreeing to film Barack Obama’s block party,” President Obama joked before teasing Dave Chappelle: “You got your block party, I got my block party.”
