Charlize Theron on Raising Black Kids: ‘I Worry About Their Safety Everyday’

Like most parents, actress Charlize Theron said she worries about the safety of her kids, especially in today’s political climate.

During a sit-down on The View, Theron discussed the importance of addressing the less-than-rosy realities of motherhood and the challenges of raising two non-white children. Theron, a native of South Africa, adopted her son Jackson, 6, in 2012 and daughter August, 2 1/2, three years later.

“I think it is a serious issue, and I do take it very seriously,” she said of her approach in rearing two children of color. “I think like every parent in the world, I want my kids to be safe. And I worry about their safety everyday.”

“I just want to know that my kids can go to school, and I don’t think that’s too much to ask,” Theron added, drawing applause from the crowd.

Last month, the actress said she was “constantly concerned” for the safety of her Black adopted kids, and at one point considered leaving the U.S. if the racial/political climate under President Donald Trump did not improve soon.

Theron focused on these issues while promoting her new motherhood-focused movie “Tully,” which premiered in select theaters on May 4.
