D.C. Mayor Murial Bowser ignites outrage after dissing district’s ‘mumbo sauce’

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser caused quite an uproar ahead of Thanksgiving by telling the city how “annoyed” she is with the nation’s beloved mumbo sauce.

“Is anybody else annoyed by Mumbo sauce ? I wish people would stop suggesting that it is quintessential DC. I’m just saying I was a full grown woman before I had heard of mumbo sauce! So there, I’ve said it,” Bowser wrote on Facebook Tuesday night.

Mumbo sauce is reportedly similar to a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce and is often served over chicken wings at local carryouts. According to the Chicago Tribune, mumbo sauce originated in Chicago and was the subject of a legal dispute launched by a DC-based sauce company, CNN reports.

“Next term DC should vote Mumbo sauce for mayor over you,” one critic said on Bowser’s post.

“And you claim you’re from DC?!” read another comment.

Another critic wrote, “Hi Facebook, how do you delete someone else’s post.”

But NBC Washington noted that a few commenters came to the mayor’s defense.

“Loved it as a kid. Even had a sense of pride that it was a DC thing like Go Go. I wouldn’t touch it now. Not a healthy condiment,” one woman wrote.

Another person said, “The Mayor’s comments about mumbo sauce recognizes there is no ONE lived Black experience. #IStandWithMuriel.”

“It tastes like sugared down ketchup mixed with Jell-O. I’m not a fan. Really was expecting more the first time I tried it,” a commenter noted.

After much debate, a spokesperson for the mayor said Bowser was simply trying to spark Thanksgiving conversation.

“The Mayor wanted to provide DC residents something to discuss on Thanksgiving beyond the midterm elections, backup quarterbacks and holiday shopping deals. All may participate in the debate; however, DC residents must lead the mumbo sauce portion,” the statement released Wednesday read.
