Dave Chappelle donates $50K to Flint after skipping 2016 benefit

Dave Chappelle donated all of the proceeds from his stand-up show on Wednesday to Flint, one year after he skipped the 2016 benefit show in order to attend the Oscars.

“I’m not taking a dime,” he told the audience in Flint, where he was performing, according to TMZ.

Instead, the $50,000 would be going to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint in order to help children who had been affected by the lead in the water. Chappelle had the foundation’s CEO meet him on the stage to receive the check that would go toward helping the community.

Chappelle’s stand-up show was at The Whiting, which is also where, in February 2016, celebrities hosted a benefit event for those affected by the Flint water crisis. The benefit event, which saw the likes of Stevie Wonder and Janelle Monáe in attendance, raised $156,000.

As Chappelle revealed in his Netflix stand-up special, he was actually going to attend the event but then got a last-minute invitation to the Oscars from his friend Chris Rock, who was hosting the awards show.

“I’m sorry everybody. I’ve never been to the Oscars. You see the movies I make,” he said, according to MLive.com.
