Ferguson Activist from Iconic Photo Found Dead In Car from Gunshot Wound

Ferguson, Mo., activist Edward Crawford, 27 was found dead in his car Thursday, May 5, from a gunshot wound. Crawford was captured in this iconic photo throwing a police tear gas canister away from children rallying on the street during the August 2014 Mike Brown protests.

Crawford’s unexpected death has sent shock waves through the activist community with many taking to Twitter to express their shock and condolences.

This is the third “suspicious” death in the past two-and-a-half years of a prominent Ferguson activist being found dead in their car from a gun shot.

In November 2014, DeAndre Joshua, 20, was found dead in his burning vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. In September of 2016, Darren Seals also was found dead in his burning car after being shot.

In a report obtained by BuzzFeed News from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, on Thursday evening at 11:46 p.m., Crawford was in the backseat of a car with two other unidentified witnesses.

According to the report:

  • “The victim began expressing he was distraught over personal matters to the witnesses.”
  • “The witnesses heard the victim rummaging in the backseat, then heard a gunshot and observed the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.”

Crawford’s death “appears to be a suicide,” according to the medical examiner’s office but official word is pending an autopsy.

More details to follow.
