From the Royal Wedding to the White House: Bishop Curry leads protest against Trump’s MAGA policies

The bishop who went viral after his rousing sermon during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding led a march to the White House to protest President Donald Trump‘s ‘America First’ policies this week.

Thursday evening, Bishop Michael Curry, who holds the distinction of being the first African-American leader of the Episcopal Church, has a history of being a vocal social justice advocate and has previously branded Trump’s America First policy “a theological heresy for the followers of Christ.”

Which is a statement in direct contradiction with evangelical Christians like Mary, Mary singer Tina Campbell wrote an open letter encouraging all of us to “pray for” then-President-elect Donald Trump—which many thought was a sign that she was in support of his ideologies.

“I was faced with two presidential candidates that I really did not approve of,” Campbell explained. “And so I had to find something, a commonality with one of them, that would make me feel like if I have to vote, I should utilize my right to vote. Since I don’t prefer either of them, what can I find that would make me vote? And some of Donald Trump’s views on Christianity, honestly, is what caused me to vote for him.”

But Bishop Curry doesn’t agree that Christian values should be used as an excuse to endorse Trump’s problematic reign and decried the Trump administration as a “crisis of moral and political leadership at the highest levels of our government”.

Standing in solidarity with other pastors and people of faith Thursday evening, Curry started the “Reclaiming Jesus” action with worship that overflowed Washington’s National City Church.

He then helped lead a candlelight vigil that moved from the church to Lafayette Square Park, across the street from the White House.
