‘I’m successful because I’m scared’: Charlamagne Tha God in new book ‘Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks on Me’

Charlamagne Tha God has become as much of a divisive figure as the people he usually interviews, but his new project is about to show a more vulnerable side.

Last week he made headlines after doing an almost two hour long interview with Kanye West, and now it’s been confirmed that The Breakfast Club host is coming out with a book on mental health.

His debut offering as a writer Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes To Those Who Create It was a clear success that went on to become a New York Times bestseller. And Monday it was announced that he’s coming out with a follow up, titled Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks On Me.

According to the official synopsis:

“SHOOK ONE details how anxiety has been a driving force in Charlamagne’s life since childhood. For many years, he stressed over what he thought were personal shortcomings: fear of being unpopular in school, potential rejection by women, of being ugly and worst of all, falling into the life of stagnation or crime that caught up so many of his friends and family in his hometown of Moncks Corner, South Carolina.”

The topics of self-worth, anxiety and public perception are ones the radio and television personality often addresses in his interviews.

“I Love Therapy. Invest In A Therapist,” he recently tweeted.

Given how much speculation has been made about Kanye West’s emotional stability, it speaks volumes that Charlamagne, who is a vocal mental health advocate, is one of the first people he felt comfortable opening up to about life after his mental breakdown.

“One of the things that was incredible when I got out of the hospital was, I had lost my confidence,” West admits.

“That’s like Michael Jordan with no jumper to me,” Charlamagne says. “What do you mean?”

“I never had the empathy for people who lacked confidence – I had so much of it, I didn’t know what it was like to be without it,” West explains. “[I didn’t have] that Black Panther, Superman-level confidence … I wouldn’t speak up … I didn’t have me.”

In recent years Black men have become more transparent about these once taboo topics and “C Tha God” has made sure to do his part to keep that discussion going. Whether you love his on-air antics or not, you have to give him props when it comes to this.
