Admitted white supremacist and career racist Randy Metcalf received the maximum sentence allowed for a hate crime-related assault — 10 years.

In January 2015, Metcalf brutally assaulted a Black man, Lamarr Sandridge, in a bar after an altercation involving Metcalf’s equally racist friends and Sandridge’s Black, female friends. The former called the latter racist slurs and was incessantly aggressive, according to a report by The Washington Post.

The Dubuque, Iowa man also bragged openly about his participation at cross burnings, talked about his disdain for Black people, and lifted his shirt to expose a swastika tattoo on his abdomen.

“This is what I’m about,” he said to his victim shortly before beating him unconscious.

The Washington Post also reports that when Metcalf’s friends threatened one of Sandridge’s friends with violence, he stepped in to protect her. Metcalf and his friends then beat Sandridge, who sustained numerous head injuries, including a broken orbital bone, and a blood clot in one of his eyes.

Christopher Perras, the prosecutor in Metcalf’s case, told the jury that, as the victim lay bleeding and unconscious on the bar floor, Metcalf, who has a history of assaults and racist behavior, “kicked him and stomped him in the face, and he kept kicking and stomping him in the face” until the bartender ran over to “shove him off,” Perras said.

Metcalf then left the bar, only to return and stomp Sandridge’s head. Because of the head trauma he sustained, Sandridge cannot remember the racial slurs hurled at him or the actual assault — he can remember the argument and waking up in the hospital, according to court documents. Metcalf attacked one of Sandridge’s female friends as well — she sustained a broken cheekbone from the assault.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, said in a statement last Wednesday that “this vicious attack threatened the most basic standards of human decency and dignity.”

She continued, “While no sentence, including this one, can undo the harm inflicted, it does send an unequivocal message that the Justice Department will vigorously prosecute hate crimes.”

The Justice Department also announced that Metcalf will also have to pay a total sum of $1,874.56 in restitution to the victims.
