Mary J. Blige: 'Chicken Wrap' controversy 'broke my heart'

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige finally spoke out about the controversy surrounding a Burger King ad that appeared on the fast food chain’s  You Tube page in April. The R&B diva received a lot of criticism for what seen as a racially demeaning performance. She recently spoke out for the first time about how the controversy made her feel. reports:

After dropping off the remix to her latest single, “Why” yesterday (June 27), Mary J. Blige sat down with Angie Martinez to discuss her new artist, Starshell and being present at the W.i.P, the night of the Drake and Chris Brown altercation.

During their conversation, MJB also opened up about the controversy surrounding her Burger King ad for the first time and discussed why she initially didn’t speak out.

“I just felt that there was no need for me to say anything, because everyone was running with it and running with it and just crucifying me and going crazy and going in,” she said. “I said it’s too much going on for me to try and stick my head out there and say anything, so I just pulled back and watched everyone and everything. And it’s just something that I thought would’ve been a branding opportunity, I went online to listen to the remix I did with Fat Joe and I’m looking for that. I’m looking for “Another Round,” and all I could see is Burger King, and chicken, and buffoonery…..and it just broke my heart.”
