Michelle Obama appalled by Trump’s school meals policy

A little over a week ago, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue signed a proclamation relaxing the requirements for schools to serve healthier meals to their students, a program that former First Lady Michelle Obama championed during the previous administration.

Specifically, the rules being relaxed would not require schools that are struggling to meet the 100% whole grain requirements and would relax sodium standards as well as allow for flavored, 1% fat milk.

“You have to stop and think, ‘Why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you, and why is that a partisan issue?” Obama said at the annual summit of the Partnership for a Healthier America, adding, “Moms, think about this: I don’t care what state you live in, take me out of the equation ― like me, don’t like me ― but think about why someone is OK with your kids eating crap.”

She went on to say that anyone who allowed unhealthy food at schools was working against the best interests of the children in those schools.

”Because here’s the secret: If somebody is doing that, they don’t care about your kid, and we need to demand everyone to care deeply about our kids,” she said.

She also tweeted about her participation at the event on Friday, writing, “Glad to be back at the #PHASummit. No one should play politics with our kids’ health. We owe them. Let’s make our voices heard.”
