New Miami bridge collapses at university resulting in death and trapped cars

The collapse of a Miami bridge has left one person dead and six hospitalized thus far. The Miami bridge is located at Florida International University and was reportedly just completed this past weekend.

According to CNN, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, said eight vehicles were still trapped under the rubble.

“I am monitoring and what we do know is that there is one person deceased and we took six people away from the scene in our fire rescue vehicles, one of which was in cardiac arrest. There are eight vehicles that are trapped underneath as far as we know and we are going to try and get to them as quickly as we can,” Giménez said.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of this tragic event in Miami, the total number of fatalities is not known at this time.

Just this past Saturday, CNN reports that Florida International University sent out a press release that expressed the appreciation for the newly designed bridge.

“FIU is about building bridges and student safety. This project accomplishes our mission beautifully,” FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg said in the statement.

“We are filled with pride and satisfaction at seeing this engineering feat come to life and connect our campus to the surrounding community where thousands of our students live.”

The university also released a time-lapse video of the moment the bridge in Miami swung into place.

President Mark B. Rosenberg proudly tweeted, “First-of-its-kind pedestrian bridge “swings into place.

According to Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue, there were people on the bridge and several cars underneath it at the time of the collapse.

The walkway weighed 950 tons and was 174 feet long, according to FIU.

According to NBC, the bridge was built across the seven-lane Tamiami Trail, the planned walkway connected the FIU campus to the town of Sweetwater where the university estimates some 4,000 students live.
