New poll suggests that President Obama's lead over Romney is growing

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll suggests that although Americans are still pessimistic about the economy their faith that President Obama can handle the country’s economy over his Republican opponent Mitt Romney is growing. Obamas lead over Romney has increased nearly one point over the past month indicating that the Obama campaign’s strategy of framing Mitt Romney as out of touch is working.

The monthly poll did reveal that the economy is still foremost on the minds of voters. However, although unemployment edged slightly up last month, the barrage of campaign ads Obama is running that continues to paint Romney as a candidate that is hiding something from the American people and is not to be trusted may be working.

Ipsos pollster Chris Jackson told Reuters that without a clear cut strategy on how Romney can better lead the country out of the recession he’ll have a difficult time taking the lead in this Fall.

“That is the key issue in this race,” he said. “For Romney to be able to make a convincing argument and to win the election, he’s going to have to have a fairly significant lead over Obama on that measure.”

Reuters reports their poll showed 46 percent of registered voters believed Obama was better suited to lead the country on jobs and the economy, compared with 44 percent for Romney. Moreover, on tax matters, 49 percent saw Obama as reasonable compared with 38 percent for Romney.

“There’s certainly no case at the moment that Romney’s building some sort of momentum toward victory here,” Jackson said.

The tax return issue has plagued the Romney campaign for weeks now and is not going away. As the media continues you to ask what it is in Romney’s tax returns that he is so reluctant to reveal it may be that voters have begun to question whether Romney can be trusted once in the White House.
