Ohio school suspends teens for reporting classmate’s bigoted comments

Two high school students in Ohio have been suspended for calling out a classmate’s racist comments on the internet. They were suspended for causing a “disruption,” while the student that made the original racist comments was not disciplined.

Shaker Heights High School junior Elena Weingard saw that a friend had posted negative comments on Snapchat about black students at the school. She was offended at the remarks.

“It was the day after the election, my friend who is no longer my friend put on a snap story about black people,” she said.

“I think people were hurt to see that this kind of racism still exists. Especially in such a place in Shaker Heights, where everyone seems to be liberal and seems to be accepting, and I think people were hurt,” Weingard said.

Weingard took screen grabs of the comments and shared them with others.

One of Weingard’s friends, Myahh Husamadeen saw the hateful comments and shared them on Twitter, where they went viral. That was when they got called into the office at school.

“I explained what happened to the vice principal,” Weingard stated. She was being suspended because, “Basically, I’m at fault because I put a private message on a public forum.”

What really upsets Weingard is not the fact that she got into trouble but that the person who originally posted the racist comments walked away with zero disciplinary action.

“I understand I did put a private message on a public forum. And they said I opened her up to harassment. But I never intended for her to be harassed. I just wanted people to know that saying that stuff is not OK.”
