‘Orange is the New Black’ Actress Furious over First-Class Comment – But Others Aren’t Convinced Her Fury is Warranted

Actress Danielle Brooks unleashed an irritated tweet yesterday about a possible racially charged experience she had in the airport. The star of “Orange is the New Black” was boarding a flight to Los Angeles and tweeted her annoyance at what she perceived was a rude comment.

I hate when gate agents look at me like I’ve never flown first class and say “You’re in first class, lucky you!”? really tho

— Danielle Brooks (@thedanieb) June 30, 2016

The tweet was later deleted, but not before fans chimed in with their support of the star. They believed the statement implied the agent told Brooks she was “lucky” for riding in first class because she is Black.

One user encouraged the actress to vent her frustrations.

Another user by the name TheNewBlaque shared their method for dealing with such encounters.

Carmine Sabia did not support the star’s reaction. He accused Brooks of being a person who is offended by anything.

But Ian Powers disagreed. He told Sabia to “stop telling Black folks how they should feel,” adding that years of oppression and enslavement of her ancestors gives her feelings credit.

Still, Sabia is one of several people who were not convinced the comment was racist.

In response to Lamar Richardson, one user seemed to tell Brooks to “get over yourself.”

Mindy Magaña urged Brooks to put the situation in perspective, pointing to shootings occurring across the country as a bigger issue than “being faux micro aggressed.”

It was not the first time the actress, who plays Taystee on ONITB, had an issue with someone assuming she has never flown first class before. She tweeted about a similar incident last summer.

Brooks did not mention the most recent airline experience again. The next update saw her informing fans she’ll be in LA for less than 24 hours to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The Tony-nominated actress, who also stars in “The Color Purple” on Broadway, teased fans about her interview in another tweet that night.
