RG III Hopes to Return This Season After MRI Reveals No Fracture in Ankle
Good news in D.C., if you’re a Robert Griffin III fan, that is: The Washington Redskins quarterback said an MRI on his left ankle injured Sunday revealed no fracture in his dislocated left ankle, fueling optimism that he could return this season.
Griffin called the MRI “positive news” and said had he needed surgery, he would not have returned to the Redskins Park facility. However, Griffin said he still is uncertain about how much time he will miss because of the dislocation suffered in Sunday’s 41-10 victory over Jacksonville.
He said the MRI results were sent to Dr. Robert Anderson. After Anderson reads the results, the Redskins will have a better idea of Griffin’s recovery period.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Griffin will be in a cast for a couple weeks, but he wasn’t sure how long the rehab process will take. He said he does believe Griffin will return this season, however.
Griffin was upbeat Sunday, never wanting to rule himself out despite a pessimistic early prognosis. Publicly and privately he maintained that he wanted to wait for the results before reacting with great disappointment or relief.
It’s the fourth time in 31 NFL games that Griffin has had to leave a game because of an injury.
During Sunday’s game, Griffin dislocated his ankle when he escaped the pocket to extend a play. Jaguars linebacker Paul Posluszny tugged on him as Griffin escaped, but the quarterback’s left foot got caught in the turf. Griffin still kept running to his right and, before going out of bounds, whipped a completion to receiver DeSean Jackson for a 19-yard gain
