Sarah Huckabee Sanders apologizes for fake African-American jobs claim

We never thought the day would come, but Sarah Huckabee Sanders finally admitted she was wrong about something.

The White House press secretary on Tuesday tweeted a correction after stating that President Donald Trump created three times as many jobs for African-American workers as his predecessor Barack Obama.

In the wake of the release of Omarosa Manigault-Newman‘s book, Sanders hoped to defend the president’s record on race relations. The defense included the bold claim that Trump has already tripled Obama’s record over eight years for creating jobs for black workers.

“This president since he took office, in the year and a half that he’s been here, has created 700,000 new jobs for African-Americans,” Sanders said at the televised news conference. “That’s 700,000 African-Americans that are working now that weren’t working when this President took place. When President Obama left, after eight years in office, he had only created 195,000 jobs for African-Americans.”

But according to Labor Department figures, that’s not even remotely true. Not to mention the line of thinking also seems to ignore the foundation Obama laid during his two terms in order to make the current employment rates possible.

Within just hours of the statements being made, Bloomberg News pointed out the inaccuracy, causing the White House Council of Economic Advisers to both apologize for the figures, and also say the statistic had been a “miscommunication” to Sanders.

Federal labor statistics clearly show that while the U.S. economy has added about 700,000 jobs that are held by African American workers since Trump took office, it added about 3 million jobs for Black workers while Obama was in office. Unlike Trump, Obama made inroads while battling a recession, according to Bloomberg News.

Even more concerning than Sanders’ inability to analyze data, is the fact that she blurted out the “fake news” in response to questions about whether she could guarantee Trump had never been recorded using the N-word during production of The Apprentice.

“I can’t guarantee anything, but I can tell you that the President addressed this question directly,” Sanders said. “I can tell you that I’ve never heard it.”
