School threatens 6th-grader with suspension over haircut

Xavier Davis has had two lines shaved into the side of his haircut for months, so he was completely taken off guard when, out of the blue, he was told by his teacher that he had to change his haircut.

“I was walking into class, and she saw my hair and said ‘You can’t have two lines in your hair. Go to the office,” Xavier told KPRC. He said that officials at Cedar Bayou Junior High in Baytown, Texas, said that he could either fix the haircut or get an in-school suspension.

So, Xavier and his mother came up with a solution: she colored in the lines in his hair with permanent marker.

“In order for him to get an education, we have to treat his hair like a coloring book, I guess,” his father, Matt Davis, said.

“He’s had his hair cut like this for six months, and now all of a sudden it’s a problem?” Davis said.

The Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District told KPRC that, according to its dress code, “letters, symbols and designs beyond a single straight line which draw attention to an individual shall not be permitted” and that “the administrator/supervisor reserves the right to determine if a hairstyle is disruptive to the educational process.”
