Selena Gomez Slammed for Dissing #BlackLivesMatter, Yet Supporting #MarchForOurLives

Selena Gomez couldn’t stand the heat when folks called her out on her selective online activism.

The singer shut down her Instagram comments Monday, March 26 when she spoke out in support for the March For Our Lives saying in part, “#NotJustAHashtag.” The problem? She slammed the use of hashtags in light of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2016.

“I don’t want this to be just an Instagram post anymore,” she wrote in the caption of three images she shared of her at the March 24 student-organized demonstration in support of ending gun violence. “PLEASE. ENOUGH. These people, families, and CHILDREN have suffered enough. Today we march for our lives. I’m going to continue to trust God with the future and also play my part in bringing change. #marchforourlives #notjustahashtag”.

Yet just two years earlier, Gomez responded to a Twitter user who asked why she hadn’t spoken out about Black Lives Matter or police brutality by saying, “so that means if I hashtag something I save lives? No — I could give two f—s about ‘sides.’ You don’t know what I do.”

She later deleted the tweet, but screenshots remain online.

Commenters immediately swooped in, calling out the hypocrisy of the former Disney Channel star backing MFOL with hashtags while questioning the use of them when it comes to Black oppression and standing up for Black lives.

“Hi @selenagomez. I don’t want you to explain anything because I know you’re full of s—,” one person tweeted. “I just wanted to let you know that I see you, sis. Be blessed.”

“Selena Gomez said a lot of messy s— about Black Lives Matter and hashtags and now wants to be included in a social movement’s space that suits her,” one person said. “Nah, BLM’s main goal is no different than march for our lives. If you don’t support BLM, you don’t support gun control.”

“When it came down to BLM, Selena was all, ‘Why can’t people use their voice for something that f—— matters?’ and ‘Oh lol so that means if I hashtag something I save lives?'” one person said. “And has the audacity to use #notjustahashtag lmao she will never have my respect.”
