Sterling K. Brown nabs Emmy for ‘OJ,’ high ratings with new show ‘This Is Us’
Sterling K. Brown won his first Emmy award Sunday for portraying lawyer Christopher Darden in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story and gave an acceptance speech for the books.
“I was talking to Melania Trump this morning and I was asking her, ‘What should I do, what should I say?’” he said with perfect shade, then got serious.
“A lot of you may not have known who I was, but you checked the box anyway… To the communities that have supported me up to this point in my career, there’s a lot of people in St. Louis making a lot of noise right now. Mama, I can hear you. I love you,” Brown said.
To his wife and fellow actress Ryan Michelle Bathe, he added, “I got the hottest chick in the game rocking my chain.”
Brown received a standing ovation from the Emmy audience, but it was just a sign of great things to come.
The veteran actor and Stanford graduate is also starring in NBC’s highly-anticipated drama This Is Us. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show earned big ratings when it premiered last night, averaging nearly 10 million viewers.
Brown plays Randall, a happily-married, highly successful businessman looking for the birth father who abandoned him as a baby.
“I’ve been without my own father for about 30 years, he passed away when I was a young man,” says Brown. “So there’s something I can connect to in a very earnest way with wanting to have him be present.”
The first episode of This Is Us had a twist ending that left a lot of fans shocked and wanting more.
