Teen from Anti-Violence Video Ironically Shot as Example of the Hell Black Children Face

There is a high rate of gun and gang violence on the streets of Chicago, disproportionately affecting families suffering from poverty.

Chicago teen Zariel Trotte, who participated in an award-winning anti-violence campaign in 2015, was gunned down in March 2016 as a result of gang violence. He was shot in the back after an argument erupted, though he was not the intended target.

In March 2012, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel outlined typical solutions to gang violence. He then placed the blame on the children and the families that raised them. Policy changes have been made for purchasing guns legally, however 90 percent of gang members obtain guns through friends or other gang members.

This Atlanta Black Star video focuses on the tragedies facing Chicago and the effects of gun violence on the Black community.
