The Success of a Texas Teen Accepted to 20 Schools Rubs These Fox 5 DC Hosts the Wrong Way and It’s Pathetic

The success of a Black Texas teen accepted into 20 colleges across the country, including four Ivy Leagues, was enough to aggravate a trio of Fox 5 DC hosts who dubbed the feat “obnoxious.”

Micheal Brown, a student at Mirabeau B. Lamar High School in Houston, snagged full-ride offers from each of the schools to which he applied, including Princeton, Yale and Harvard University, just to name a few. Footage of Brown’s joyous reaction to an acceptance letter from dream school Stanford University has since gone viral.

Not everyone was as ecstatic about his achievements, however.

Brown’s story “has sparked the discussion of how many schools you should apply to,” a Fox 5 anchor noted, suggesting the Texas teen stole the spotlight from other worthy applicants. “Don’t you think it’s a little ridiculous this kid applied to 20 [colleges], basically wait-listing another kid.”

“I think it’s ridiculous,” co-anchor Holly Morris chimed in. “He could’ve applied to five; he would have gotten in to all five and it would be equally impressive. Ten would have been impressive … Admissions officers say on average you should apply to 4-8 schools.”

“I think it’s a little obnoxious,” she added, “because you can only go to one, you can only accept one full ride. And you are taking a spot from someone else who worked really hard.”

A third anchor noted that if a full ride goes unaccepted, it goes back into the pot for other qualified students.
