Top Ballerina Misty Copeland Teams Up with Tracy Oliver to Produce Dance Drama For Fox
Producer Tracy Oliver, who is most commonly known for her acting and writing work on Issa Rae’s The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, will be producing the future show for Fox. Oliver currently works on the Starz show, Survivor’s Remorse.
Oliver has also risen to stardom as an emerging producer who landed two feature writing gigs including the upcoming Barbershop 3 and an untitled girls’ trip movie at Universal. She is also co-writing the romantic comedy, Ordinary People with Black-ish creator, Kenya Barris for ABC. The show is loosely based on musician John Legend and model Chrissy Teigen’s relationship.
Copeland’s prospective drama will follow a young, hip and diverse group of aspiring dancers as they fiercely compete for places in the prestigious American Ballet Theatre company. Copeland rose to prominence this year after becoming the first Black principle dancer at the Theatre.
The talented dancer, who went from living in a motel room with her mother and siblings and started ballet classes later than other girls, at age 13, had her story novelized and turned into a documentary film, A Ballerina’s Tale, released this month.
