Trayvon Martin memorial moved to Sanford museum

The makeshift memorial honoring the Miami teen who was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer will be moved from the entrance to the gated community where he died.

The city of Sanford, Florida announced Monday that the Trayvon Martin memorial, composed of flowers, cards, stuffed animals and a cross will be moved from the entrance at the Retreat at Twin Lakes to the city museum.

A city spokeswoman released the following statement:

In an effort to protect and preserve the remaining Trayvon Martin curbside memorial items, and after communicating with representatives of Trayvon Martin’s family, Sanford City Manager, Norton Bonaparte announced that the curbside memorial site items placed outside the entrance of the Retreat at Twin Lakes Subdivision in Sanford have been taken to the Sanford Museum as of 2:30 pm today by city staff.

All the items retrieved have been carefully handled and inventoried.

George Zimmerman, who faces second degree murder charges in Martin’s shooting death February 26th, is reportedly in a safe house in Seminole County. He was released on bond last week with the stipulation that he not leave the county without the court’s permission.
