Trayvon Martin to receive honorary aviation degree from Florida Memorial University

Florida Memorial University, a historically black college, has announced that Trayvon Martin will be receiving a posthumous, honorary aviation degree during its commencement ceremonies this year.

According to the school’s Facebook post, which went up on Wednesday, during the commencement on May 13, Martin will receive a a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical science with a concentration in flight education, which will honor the “steps he took during his young life toward becoming a pilot.”

Martin had spent time during his freshman year at the George T. Baker Aviation School seeking to learn how to become a pilot like his uncle, Ronald Fulton, and his hero, Barrington Irving.

“Of special significance is awarding posthumously the Bachelor of Science Degree in Aviation to Trayvon Martin. Sybrina, our alum, epitomizes strength and dignity as she uplifts other victims of violence while effecting change for a more equal and just society,” noted the university’s president, Roslyn Clark, in a press release that also noted that Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, is an alumna of the school.

Fulton and Tracy Martin will be accepting the honorary degree on behalf of their son.

The school will also hold a fundraiser after the commencement, with part of the funds being dedicated to The Trayvon Martin Foundation, which has its headquarters at the school.
