Voters claim Facebook swung election towards Trump

Some voters are claiming that Facebook swung the election towards Donald Trump because of a string of unsubstantiated articles that popped up on the social media site prior to the election.

On Thursday, a top Facebook executive admitted that there is “much more we need to do” concerning the clickbait articles.

“We take misinformation on Facebook very seriously,” Adam Mosseri, VP of product management at Facebook, said in a statement. “We value authentic communication, and hear consistently from those who use Facebook that they prefer not to see misinformation.”

“As long as it’s on Facebook … people start believing it,” President Obama complained during a rally in Michigan on Monday.

Some of the false articles included a July piece claiming the Pope had endorsed Donald Trump for president. Another article claimed in August that Megyn Kelly was voting for Hillary Clinton. A third in November claimed that an FBI investigator looking into Hillary Clinton’s emails was dead in an “apparent murder-suicide.”

Facebook has already received much criticism during this election cycle because of its tendency to create an echo chamber for political beliefs by showing users what it thinks they like based on algorithms of what they click on, thus showing conservatives only conservative posts and liberals only liberal posts.
