24 Hours in NYC + What to Do When You Feel Like You’re Not Good Enough

I’m writing this post from the plane on my way from New York to San Diego. I’m headed home after spending a day in the city for my first influencer campaign with…Reebok! It was definitely an unexpected opportunity AND a very last-minute trip, but I felt called to say YES to the invitation to participate in their 2018 women’s empowerment calendar – I’m being featured for the month of June!

Right now, I’m listening to Carolyn Malachi sing “Beautiful Dreamer” and I’ve been thinking about how sometimes, we miss out on opportunities because deep down, we don’t think we’re good enough. We don’t believe we deserve it.

The other day, I did an Instagram Live (you ARE following me on IG @happyblackwoman, right?!) on the topic of saying YES to opportunities even when you don’t feel like you’re ready.

You can watch the recording here: https://www.facebook.com/happyblackwoman/videos/2214340008591953/

More on that later, but first – here’s how I spent my 24 hours in New York.

I flew into JFK, took a Lyft from the airport to my hotel and even though my body said lay down, I was determined to see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree. So I wrapped myself up in my coat, scarf and gloves and went out walking around the city. I wandered around the Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, Times Square. The streets were busy and bright. The city was lit up with energy. I had a lovely steak dinner at Del Frisco’s and did some journaling while sipping my red sangria.

The next morning, I take a Lyft to the studio for the photo shoot and the room is full of beautiful, inspirational women who are influential in the fitness and women’s empowerment space.

I catch myself feeling self-conscious among all the athletes in the group. My hand goes instinctively to my belly and the little pouch of 5-ish extra pounds that’s been there for most of the year.

ME, the girl who never goes to the gym, has been booked to be featured in a women’s empowerment calendar with a global FITNESS brand.

I smile at everyone in my normal Rosetta smile, but in the back of my mind, there’s a part of me still wondering, “why me?”

They give me a sports bra, leggings and a light jacket to wear for the shoot. Then it’s time for hair and makeup. I get a natural look for my face and my hair loosely twisted back.

I pull on the leggings. They hug me in all the right places. My boobs fit perfectly in the bra. I let out a big sigh of relief.

Cardi B is playing and I’m in my zone for the camera.

I look healthy.

I look confident.

I look happy.

I tell myself that if I didn’t belong here, then I wouldn’t BE here.

I sit down for the interview with the producer. I don’t think, I just flow.

The gist of my message was that fitness is about self-love. It’s about believing that you deserve to put yourself on your to-do list and take care of your body, whether that’s through walking, yoga, meditation, healthier eating or hard-core cardio in the gym.

It’s about making YOU matter instead of putting everyone else first in your life. As I was talking, I realized that my experience with transforming my own mindset has primarily been about changing what I believe to be true about myself and what’s possible for me.

There’s no magical self-worth light switch that I flipped. It’s been an ongoing process of making a conscious choice to think different thoughts. It’s been a journey to reprogram my mind with a new set of beliefs.

In that moment, I reminded myself that I get to CHOOSE my beliefs. And I decided to focus on 4 specific beliefs that empower me and lift me up.

I choose to believe that…

  1. I am more than good enough.
  2. I deserve to be happy.
  3. I am worthy of success.
  4. My presence, my voice and my work makes a positive difference in the world.

AND SO IT IS.

I’m curious…

Have you ever felt like you weren’t good enough for an opportunity that was presented to you? What are you now choosing to believe?

Leave me a comment below and let’s talk about it :)

Love,

Rosetta
