Proceed As the Way Opens: A Stress-Free Guide to Making Decisions

“Remember, there are no mistakes, only lessons. Love yourself, trust your choices, and everything is possible.” – Cherie-Carter Scott

This morning, I sat in meditation, feeling overwhelmed by several decisions I have to make over the next few weeks. As usual, I began by reading the daily passage from Mark Nepo’s The Book of Awakening. His words have truly been a calming force in my life, especially as a bridge to my meditation practice. After I finished reading, I closed my eyes and sat cross-legged on my yoga mat. As I began to breathe in slowly, I could feel silence surrounding me.

After a few moments of sitting and breathing, I noticed the thought:

Proceed as the way opens.

I’d seen one of my former professors post this quote on Facebook a while back and I later went to look up the author. It sounded so wise and I wanted to investigate the concept further.

What I found was that “proceed as the way opens” is a Quaker saying that means:

To undertake a service or course of action without prior clarity about all the details but with confidence that divine guidance will make these apparent and assure an appropriate outcome.

As soon as that thought popped into my head, my body started to relax. I was able to stretch for a bit, my legs tightening along the purple length of my yoga mat.

And when I stood up to get on with the rest of my day, I felt free.
