Stop Trying to Play God

Today, I was in Austin, Texas speaking at the 2017 Mission Driven Human Capital Summit.

It was a sold-out conference for nonprofit leaders in Texas and I was honored to serve as a keynote speaker and workshop leader. I also got to do a book signing for my first book, How to Become a Nonprofit Rockstar.

The theme of the summit was “Leading Through Change” and I spoke about finding your purpose, honoring your personal mission, radical self care and avoiding burnout as a leader.

Sometimes, there are certain things I say that really resonate with people.

During my keynote today, this was my invitation to the audience:

Stop trying to play God.

What did I mean by that?

I meant that if you want to stop feeling overwhelmed, tired, overworked and burnt out, you have to actually stop trying to SAVE everyone.

Stop trying to HELP everyone.

Stop FIGHTING for everyone.

Because you can only do so much – you can’t do it all.

You can’t be everything to everybody.

You can only do what it is you are truly meant to do.

The truth is – you are only on this earth for a short period of time.

And you DO NOT have to spend most of it working your fingers to the bone, neglecting your own needs and desires in the process.

Can you make a difference? Of course! We all can.

But – you are literally only one woman.

There is only so much you can do in this lifetime without giving yourself a heart attack.

Your job cannot be to save everyone at the detriment of yourself.

Your job cannot be to fight for affordable healthcare for others, while you yourself are not able to take a day off work to go to the doctor for your back pain.

Your job cannot be to work for financial security for others, while you yourself are struggling to make ends meet because your job barely pays you a living wage.

There will always be people who need help.

But taking care of all 7 billion of them is not your job.

That is God’s job.

YOUR job, first and foremost, is to save yourself.

To help yourself.

To fight for yourself.

Then, you will be in a much better position to not only make a difference for others, but to inspire them by your example.

Here’s another concept I shared today that resonated with attendees:

The work is a part of you, but it is not you.

Meaning –

Your JOB is a part of you, but it is not you.

Your CAREER is a part of you, but it is not you.

Your BUSINESS is a part of you, but it is not you.

You are you.

And if you truly want to be happy…

You have to start making YOU a priority.

Love,

Rosetta
