Have You Given Up on Your Business?
I’ve seen it far too many times…
You get one negative comment on your blog. So you just stop blogging.
You can’t seem to get more than 53 people to “like” your Facebook page. So you decide to shut it down and go on a “social media sabbatical.”
You plan a big launch, but not one person signs up for your online course. So you decide no one wants to learn from you and never offer an online course again.
You spend all day writing the perfect article for your newsletter, but when you send it out you get 5 unsubscribes. So you stop sending out newsletters.
You can’t seem to figure out Mailchimp, so you decide to stop trying to build your email list.
You conduct 10 free strategy sessions but no one buys your coaching program. So you stop offering it..
You see other people in your industry making money every day, but you still have yet to land that first paying client. So you decide maybe you’re just not “cut out” for entrepreneurship.
Any of these scenarios sound familiar?
5 Important Steps to Launch Your Speaking Business in 2016
One of the most powerful ways to make a difference in thousands of people’s lives is to speak at events where you can tell your story, share your message and teach what you know.
Now that I host several of my own live events throughout the year, I don’t speak at conferences as much I used to, but I still I get a TON of questions from aspiring speakers who want to make money by spreading their important message all over the world. I’ve been speaking professionally since 2008 and I love being able to get paid to do what I would do for free – teach and inspire others!
Today, I sat down to reflect on five of the most important steps I’ve taken over the past 6 years to build a successful speaking career. I hope they help you launch your own speaking business in the coming year!

If I Knew Then What I Know Now: Fear vs. Legacy
“Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.” — Unknown
I’m writing this post from my hotel room in San Diego, California where I’ve been for the past few days for an awesome training and networking event with my business mentor, Lisa Sasevich. I’m a lifelong learner and strongly believe in surrounding yourself with people who have already “made it” to where you want to be in life!
It was such an honor to share the stage with my mentor and peers to tell my authentic story of not only what I’ve been able to accomplish in my business, but why teaching women how to live lives of happiness, success and freedom is so important to me.
3 Magical Steps to Attract More Money Into Your Business This Month
One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned since I quit my job back in 2010 is that there is no limit to the amount of money you can make in your business. We are always surrounded by the energy of abundance; we just have to claim it! There is never a shortage of potential clients and customers who want what you have to offer.
Once I embraced this infinite possibility for my life, I began to see so many doors open up for me, especially when it came to increasing my income. This year was the first year that I have been able to earn over $100,000 in my business and I owe much of that success to the power of setting goals, eliminating limiting beliefs and doing the work!
If you’ve been struggling to create consistent cash flow in your business, here are 3 simple, yet powerful steps you can take TODAY that will help you bring in more income this month.

6 Powerful Strategies for Hosting a Successful 3-Day Live Event
- Professional photography by Lynsey Weatherspoon
Now that I’ve had a chance to get some perspective, I wanted to share some valuable lessons learned from my experience hosting our first 3-day live event for women entrepreneurs! Holding the space for a room full of people over the course of a whole weekend is NOT easy (especially for an introvert like me!), but after seeing the impact the event had on attendees, it was so worth it! We had dozens of women (and a few men!) join us from all over the country to learn practical strategies for getting their businesses off the ground.
Here are my 6 best tips for hosting a successful 3-day live event, based on my own experience with our recent Launch Your Business LIVE 3-Day Boot Camp in Atlanta!
VIDEO: 5 Things You Need to Turn Your Side Hustle Into a Full-Time Business
Contrary to popular belief, it is totally possible to build a successful business while you still have a 9 to 5 job. In my case, I started my first business as a consultant back in 2008 while I was still working at a nonprofit in DC. My little “side hustle” grew to the point when I was earning a nice supplemental income and ultimately enabled me to leave my job less than 2 years later.
Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor numerous women in our Happy Black Woman community, helping them to stop procrastinating and finally get their businesses off the ground. Now, some women are perfectly happy to build an additional income stream on the side, but most ladies that come to me for help are looking to eventually be able to quit their jobs so they can live life on their own terms. The problem is…there are usually a few key pieces missing from their plan.
If you’ve been longing to grow your side hustle into a full-time business, you might be missing one of the following things. In the video below, I walk you through a handy list to guide you in building the momentum you need to move forward!
No Marijuana in the Hotel Room? 3 Speaking Tips from the Mile High City
I’m on the road again…this time in Denver, Colorado to serve as a keynote speaker for a nonprofit conference being held at a local university.
Something interesting you may know about Colorado is that the state recently passed a law legalizing marijuana. My driver told me a bit about it on the ride from the airport and how the law is already helping the city’s economy.
But I still did a double take when I checked into my hotel.
How Much Money Do You Need to Start Your Business?
Every time I give a business workshop or training, I get some form of this question:
How much money do I need to start my business?
Actually, it’s usually more of a definitive statement like, “I wish I could start my business, but I don’t have the funding.”
What I’ve learned is that most people have very unrealistic expectations of what it really takes to get a business off the ground. Many seem to think that you have to have a lot of money to start making money.
The reality couldn’t be further from the truth.
6 Simple Ways to Make Time for Your Business
One of the biggest excuses people use for not making progress on their business goals can be summed up in one deflating, five-word sentence:
I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH TIME.
First of all, I can tell you right now that if you’re using this excuse, you’re flat-out lying to yourself. Let’s just keep it real here, shall we? We all have the same 24 hours in a day. And everyone is busy. So the truth is, some of us use our time wisely and some of us waste our precious “free time” on things that don’t even matter. It’s up to you how to spend the limited time that you DO have.
When I work with private clients and students, we take a close look at their calendar and create a 20-hour weekly schedule to maximize productivity in their business.
Here are six simple ways to make time for your business (or any goal, really), even if you have a demanding full-time job, kids and a husband at home!
How to Plan a 4-City Promotional Tour: A Brief Guide to Organizing Live Events on a Budget
I’m writing this at 7:00am in Honolulu. The sun is rising above the palm trees. I’m sitting at my favorite table in my favorite coffee shop, drinking something called an “island breakfast tea” and nibbling on a warm, crumbly blueberry muffin.
In just a couple of days, I’ll be on a flight from HNL to LAX (my life will be lived in airport codes this month) for our first Launch Your Business Tour stop in Los Angeles. This will be the THIRD year in a row that I’ve gone on tour to different cities to meet and connect with women in our Happy Black Woman community all over the country. In the past, we’ve had women travel from as far as Pennsylvania, New York and North Carolina to our DC events and this year is no different. There will be women traveling from several states away to each tour stop so they can participate in what will be a powerful, low-cost live training and networking opportunity!
But there are a few BIG changes with this year’s tour that I’m both excited and honestly, a little nervous about. Here’s a little behind-the-scenes of what I’ve been dreaming up for the last few months. I wanted to share this with you today, from my heart, because I know you may be thinking about hosting your own events and might be a little afraid to get out there with your message.
Because the truth is…this year’s tour is the culmination of a lot of planning and marketing and fear.
Four Strategies to Build Your Professional Network the Old-Fashioned Way
You’ve probably heard that the key to growing your business and getting ahead in your career is to network, network, network. Well, that’s because it’s true! But no matter how popular technology becomes, you simply cannot restrict your networking efforts to the internet. Although I was able to build up both of my businesses largely through social media, my most influential professional relationships have actually come from an initial in-person meeting.
Back in the day, before email, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, people actually made connections face to face most of the time. A phone call was more preferable to email, and most business was done through word of mouth. These days, online tools have made communication much less time-consuming, but the old-fashioned ways of networking still hold true.
So here are four ways to build a strong professional network – just like people used to do back in the day.
VIDEO: How to Find 20 Hours a Week to Work on Your Business (Even If You Have a Full-Time Job)
In today’s video post, I walk you through a step-by-step process for how to find 20 hours a week to work on your business, even if you have a 9 to 5, full-time job. Whether you’re growing a side hustle, writing a book or getting your nonprofit up and running, this strategy can help you get things done on a consistent basis.
8 Reasons Why You’re Not Making Any Money in Your Business (Some of These Might Make You Mad)
As a coach, I feel like I’ve heard it all when it comes to helping people reach their business goals. I hear so many of the same excuses over and over again that I can almost finish someone’s sentence when they start down the path of self-sabotage. Given the hundreds of women I’ve worked with through my classes, courses, coaching programs and live training events, I thought it might be time for a little tough love to nudge you back into your power as a talented entrepreneur.
Here are some reasons why you might not be making the money you want in your business right now. Deep down, if you know any of these reasons are holding you back, don’t get mad, just commit to shifting your mindset and taking action.
This Is It! How to Make a Bold Declaration for Your Business in 2014
I was so hyped this morning walking to my office listening to Kirk Franklin’s uplifting song, “Declaration (This Is It!).” If you’ve never heard it, it’s all about letting go of your excuses so that you can make progress on your goals. It’s about stepping out on faith and taking action. It’s about believing in yourself and the dreams you have for your life.
The song made me think about the declaration I made for my business in 2014. This year, I’ve committed to “build and grow” my business so that I can help 1,000 women create their ideal lives. I know I’m here on this earth to make a difference and my products and services are what allow me to do that on a larger scale. So “build and grow” is the declaration I’m making for my life and business in 2014. That’s the stand I’m taking and there’s nothing that can stop me from fulfilling my vision to use my gifts in service to empowering women all over the world.
3 Questions to Create Your Passion-Based Business Plan
The first thing I do with each of my long-term coaching clients is to talk about the larger vision they have for their life, business and career. We explore the “big picture” for their life and work in a private coaching session. And as the year comes to an end, I wanted to share part of this powerful process with you as a gift to assist you in planning for success in your business.
Here are a few key questions to ask yourself as you create your own passion-based business plan for the coming year.
How to Be Productive Every Single Day (VIDEO)
In today’s video post, I share the #1 productivity tool that keeps me moving forward on my goals every single day. I’m working with a few business coaching clients right now on time management and productivity and of course, we have our action plans and accountability forms. But one of the most effective tools I use and recommend is so simple…I almost can’t believe how well it works! And no, it’s not some fancy software or nifty technology. And no, it won’t even cost you very much money.
In the video, I share a simple technique help you get things done on a daily basis, especially when it comes to your business:
Can’t Knock the Hustle: 5 Ways to Make More Money in Your Business This Month
“Good things come to those who hustle.” – Anais Nin
One thing I’ve learned since I first started my side hustle back in 2008 is that money doesn’t just fall into your lap! Every month, it can feel like an uphill battle to bring in new contracts, make new sales and book new clients. Unfortunately, many business owners do the bare minimum to market their products and services and end up reaping minimal results. But the truth is, you can’t treat your business like a hobby if you want it to support you and your family in any meaningful way.
To start making more money in your business, you have to get serious and be willing to put yourself out there on a consistent basis. You have to constantly be marketing yourself and what you have to offer (yep, even if you hate marketing). There’s no way around this unless you want to be broke forever. If you want your business to be successful, you’re gonna have to HUSTLE.
Here are a few ideas to help you generate more income this month. Once you commit to taking inspired action, it’s just a matter of time before you start seeing results come flowing to you!
3 Ways to Be Prepared for a Golden Networking Opportunity
A few years ago, I was at an event in DC and there was a photographer there taking pictures of the speakers and the attendees. As the event was ending, several of the attendees approached the photographer to inquire about her services for their own events. What a fantastic opportunity for a freelancer, right? She said sheepishly, “I don’t have any business cards on me.” Still wanting to get to know her, the people who had gathered around her further inquired about her day job. The photographer then proceeded to tell the small crowd all about her current position, her jerk of a boss and how much her life basically sucked. Not surprisingly, it wasn’t long before everyone walked away, muttering, “my, my look at the time…”
I tell you this story because it’s a prime example of missing a golden networking opportunity. The photographer at the event had a captive audience that wanted to hear more about her services, practically slapping her smack dab in the face. And not only did she not have business cards, but she gave the attendees a negative vibe when she started talking about her crappy job. I get a lot of questions from women in our HBW community about networking and the best advice I can give is to BE PREPARED. In today’s post, I share some simple tips for what you can do to capitalize on your own golden networking opportunity. Because sometimes, you only get one chance!
How to Decide the Next Step in Your Career
A few years ago, I was facilitating a training and one of the participants asked me, “So, Rosetta, what’s next for you?” I had no answer because at the time, I was wondering the same thing myself! I love the term “infinite possibility” but when you have several different paths you can take, it can be difficult to pick one and move forward. Here I was, trying to help this group of leaders figure out how to get to the next stage of their careers, and I wasn’t able to articulate where mine is going.
“I don’t know,” is what I said at the time. Soon after though, I went through a process to figure out what, exactly, I wanted to do next. Here are some ideas you might use in your own stage of discernment about where you want your career to go.

How to Deal With Criticism from Random Strangers on the Internet
Last night, I received an email from a woman I’ve never met before in my life. As far as I know, she and I have never even corresponded virtually, so her communication was that much more confusing. I deleted the email almost as soon as I read it, so I’ll have to paraphrase the gist...

Three Baby Steps You Can Take Today to Get Your Business Off the Ground

Baby Steps Are Still Steps
Last night, I taught a free teleseminar called Launch Yourself: 4 Steps to Start Your Business in 2013. The one-hour call was an introduction to my new course starting on January 22, Launch Yourself: A Roadmap for Introducing Your Business to the World.
How Much Are You Investing in the Business of You?
Today, I attended a half-day workshop hosted by the Virginia Chapter of the National Speakers Association. The workshop was called “The Story Finder: How to Create New Stories in 10 Minutes or Less!” and was presented by a fantastic speaker named Ed Tate. As a first-time attendee, I only had to pay $47, yet I easily received at least 10 times the value of the workshop fee. Not only did Ed give us concrete tools to create compelling stories for our speeches, but he also dropped some valuable knowledge about the speaking business itself. I took so many notes today, my head is spinning LOL.
You Can’t Make Money if You Keep Giving Everything Away for Free
When I was working in the nonprofit field, my main area of expertise was in fundraising. This means I pretty much spent eight years of my career asking people for money to support charitable causes. Yet ironically, when I decided to take my business full-time in 2010, I had a hard time marketing myself, let alone asking potential clients and customers to pay me for my services and products. Because I started out as a blogger, I was so used to giving everything away for free. This included valuable information and expertise that, I soon learned, many consultants charge top dollar for!
Obviously, if I had kept along the path of giving away all my expertise for free, I wouldn’t have a business right now. The model that has proven successful for me has been to offer SOME information for free – blog posts, workbooks, webinars, teleseminars – and charge money for my more in-depth, robust resources.
You Have to Go All In
Along with millions of Americans, I watched Mitt Romney give his concession speech after all the major networks predicted an Obama win. After all that campaigning, Romney didn’t win the presidency. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he had to stand up and give a speech in the midst of his failure. It looked painful, especially as his family trotted off the stage in Boston for the walk of shame.
It made me think of how devastating that moment would be for most of us. We’re already so afraid of failing at any level, that failing so publicly would prevent many people from showing their faces to the world for a long, long time.
This is always the risk of following your dreams, of going all in.
