What I Learned About Self-Worth From Upgrading to Business Class

I’m writing this from my laptop on my flight from Miami to Los Angeles.

Last night, I left Argentina on the first leg of my journey to the next stop on my travel bucket list – Indonesia!

I’ll begin my trip in Jakarta and then head to Bali from there.

At the last minute, I decided to upgrade my seat from Economy to Business Class.

I called American Airlines (my favorite airline) to walk me through the process since I had never done it before.

I’d done First Class upgrades on short flights within the U.S., but never for an international flight.

That was before I learned the art of maximizing my frequent flyer miles!

Now, with well over 100,000 frequent miles at my disposal, I was willing to part with 25,000 of them, plus $425 to experience international business class for the first time.

For what would be a long, 14+ hour flight, I figured it would be nice to have lie flat seats so I could sleep well.

I had the best dinner I ever had on an airplane – steak, potatoes, salad and ice cream for dessert.

I also had a lovely breakfast – a warm gruyere omelet with chicken sausage, fresh fruit, coffee and orange juice.

I’m listening to the “easy listening” station right now. One of my favorite Maxwell songs is playing from his Embrya album –”Submerge: Til We Become the Sun.”

I feel well-rested. I’m in my happy place.

My neck isn’t cramped like it usually is when I try to sleep in coach.

And I keep asking myself – why did I wait so long to start upgrading my flights?

And to take it even further – why did I wait so long to start upgrading my LIFE?

Don’t I deserve the best instead of constantly cutting corners when it comes to my desires?

What I’m learning is how important it is treat myself to these kinds of luxuries as it has a direct effect on my mindset.

And not just once in a while.

But as often as possible.

Can I let you in on a secret?

This might make you think less of me, but it’s the truth….

I used to envy all the people traveling in first class or business class.

I used to think to myself:

“Yeah well, they are rich white people, so they can afford to travel like that.”

I’m not proud of it, but that was my thought process.

I was jealous watching them sipping champagne and flipping through magazines while I was lugging my beat-up suitcase down the aisle to economy.

I was jealous and I was judging them. Hard.

Because I thought that kind of lifestyle just wasn’t for me.

But if I’m being honest with you, it went much deeper than that.

The real issue was: I didn’t believe I was worth it.

I used to think that I couldn’t experience those kinds of perks.

Because I’m single and living on one income…

Because everything depends on me…I can’t afford to splurge.

I might need that money for rent or food or an emergency.

But when I shifted my mindset to focus on manifesting more abundance in my life to cover all those scenarios, everything changed for me.

I realized that I didn’t have to keep making myself suffer just to save a few dollars here and there.

I discovered that I could create the kind of lifestyle I truly WANTED, instead of limiting myself only to what I felt I could afford.

(In terms of travel, sometimes it’s the difference between taking a crowded shuttle to my hotel because it’s cheap vs. paying a little more for a private car or taxi to get me there faster and with less stress.)

My point is – it’s OK to splurge on YOU.

To spoil YOU.

To treat yourself how YOU want to be treated.

Just because.

You don’t need a reason.

You don’t have to justify it.

And you certainly don’t have to wait to win the lottery or find a wealthy guy to pamper you.

You can do that for yourself.

You can give yourself the gift of upgrading your life, whatever that may look like for you.

Love,

Rosetta
