A wonderful collection of African articles, essays, poems and stories, selected by Langston Hughes and published in 1960. This is a great snapshot of the time, especially the articles talking about troubles in South Africa, but there are some interesting pieces from writers in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Senegal. The stories and poems often have folk tale elements, or again detail the troubles between blacks and whites. There is a diverse range of writing, all showing in their own way, an insight into African life in the mid 20th century.
